Design a floor plan for a fashion store that directs customer flow from the entrance to the rear. Mark key zones such as hotspots, new collections, changing rooms, accessories, pop-up space, café, till point, and click & collect.

Task Instructions

1. Understand the Key Zones

Familiarise yourself with the main areas in the store layout:

  • Hot Spot: High-traffic area that attracts attention
  • New Collections: Display for the latest fashion trends
  • Changing Rooms: Customer fitting spaces
  • Accessories: Smaller items like bags, shoes, jewellery
  • Café: Relaxation area to encourage longer visits
  • Till Point: Checkout counter
  • Click & Collect: Space for online order pickups

2. Plan Customer Flow

Design your layout to guide customers smoothly from entrance to checkout:

  • Flow Path: Create a natural route through key zones
  • Entry Point: Lead customers to eye-catching areas such as hotspots or new collections
  • High-Traffic Zones: Position popular or promotional items where customers stop
  • Changing Rooms: Place at the back for privacy but keep accessible
  • Exit: Locate café and click & collect near exit for convenience

3. Sketch Your Floor Plan

Create a layout sketch marking:

  • Entrance: Customer entry point
  • Zones: Hotspot, new collections, changing rooms, accessories, etc.
  • Pathways: Ensure enough space for easy movement
  • Exit: Till point and click & collect location
  • Use a simple floor plan template if needed.

4. Consider Brand Identity

Reflect the store’s brand in your design by considering:

  • Colour Scheme: Align colours with the brand identity
  • Materials and Fixtures: Choose furniture and fittings that support the brand look
  • Aesthetic: Create a cohesive, visually appealing shopping environment

5. Feedback and Refinement

After completing your floor plan:

  • Review: Check if the layout encourages exploration without crowding
  • Invite Feedback: Share your design with peers and refine accordingly

Add to your Portfolio:

1. Final Floor Plan Sketch

  • A clear, labelled layout showing customer flow and key zones (hotspot, new collections, changing rooms, etc.)
  • Can be hand-drawn or digital (PDF, JPG or PNG format)
  • Short Written Rationale (100-200 words)

2. Explanation of your design decisions:

  • How does your layout guide customer flow?
  • Why did you place certain zones in specific locations?
  • How does the design reflect the brand identity?

3. (Optional) Annotated Version

  • If helpful, add brief notes or a short voice recording to explain your layout decisions in more detail

Note: Your next portfolio review takes place after Lesson 6.
