This task builds confidence by turning theory from the first two lessons into a practical, portfolio-ready piece. You will apply core VM principles - symmetry, asymmetry, repetition, and alternation - to bring a chosen product range to life.

Task Instructions

Design a small-scale retail window display that tells a story.

1. Pick Your Product(s)

Choose 1-3 physical items (e.g. shoes, a candle set, toy range). Keep them small enough to photograph or sketch easily.

2. Define the Story

Write one sentence that captures the mood or theme you want your display to communicate (e.g. Summer road‑trip freedom or Calm winter evenings).

3. Gather Inspiration

Create a mini mood board with 6-8 images or colour swatches on paper (or using Canva, Photoshop, Pinterest)

4. Plan the Layout

Sketch or block out where each product, prop and sign will sit.

Think balance - does one side feel heavier than the other? Adjust until it feels stable.

5. Choose Colours & Lighting

Select a main colour palette (3-4 colours).

Add a lighting note: bright, soft, spotlight, or natural daylight?

6. Build & Capture Your Display

Option 1: Arrange products on a table, shelf, or small cardboard “window”. Light with a desk lamp or natural light and photograph.

Option 2: Use digital tools, paper collage, or pencil sketches to create a mock-up. Export or photograph your work.

Add to your Portfolio

1. Your developed window concept

Include up to 5 images

2. Short rationale (~200 words) explaining:

Your Display Idea

How your Window tells as story

How VM Principles work in your design
