Practice-based research is a mode of academic inquiry in which creative practice is both the method of investigation and the outcome of the research. It is commonly used in the arts, design, architecture, and performance disciplines, where the making or doing of something is a central component of the research process.
The creative work itself—whether a textile collection, installation, film, or performance—embodies new knowledge, and is typically accompanied by a written component that contextualises, reflects on, and theorises the practice.
