Window displays are more than just a place to show products - they’re a reflection of what’s happening in culture, fashion and design.

In Lesson 2, we explored how consumer trends and techniques like colour, lighting, and storytelling come together to create displays that resonate with people today.

Here’s something to think about:

Are window displays leading the trends - or just following them?

par Beth S,
Window displays can both lead and follow trends, depending on the brand's intention and influence. Some high-concept fashion houses use their windows to set the tone for upcoming seasons—think of how Selfridges or Dover Street Market often present bold, experimental displays that push boundaries before the trend hits mainstream. On the other hand, many high street retailers respond to what’s already resonating culturally, adapting their windows to reflect what customers are seeing on social media, runways, or influencers.

A recent example I saw was a COS window using earthy, muted tones, sculptural silhouettes, and minimal text—clearly reflecting the growing consumer interest in slow fashion, sustainability, and clean aesthetics. The layout was sparse but intentional, with natural textures like raw wood and linen to create a calm, mindful feel. The use of soft, diffused lighting reinforced the idea of “conscious luxury.”

Colour and layout are vital for relevance—bright neons and clashing prints might tap into Y2K nostalgia, while monochrome minimalism speaks to timelessness or quiet luxury. Messaging too is getting bolder—many windows now include slogans or digital elements that speak directly to values like inclusivity or climate consciousness.

Question: How do you find the balance between creating a visually exciting window and not overwhelming the message you want to communicate?
