About this course
Course Overview
Required Materials
To complete this course on UX Design, the following materials are required:
1. Basic Idea for an App
You’ll need a basic concept or idea for an app you want to design, which will serve as the foundation for the course activities and projects.
2. Open Source Software
Access to open-source software tools that may be required for prototyping, testing, and design. The specific software will be confirmed later, but it’s important to have access to free or open-source design tools.
3. Access to Figma Design Tool Free Plan (recommended)
Link: Figma Plans & Pricing
You’ll need the free plan of Figma to create and test prototypes, as well as to complete wireframing and UI design tasks.
4. Online Prototyping Tools (Optional)
Recommended Tools: Figma (preferred), Canva, or Adobe XD for creating low-fidelity wireframes and prototypes.
These tools will help you visualize design ideas and create prototypes at different fidelity levels.
5. Research and Documentation Materials
For conducting research and testing, you will need access to a platform for taking notes (e.g., Google Docs, Word, or any text editor).
Templates will be provided for activities such as ethnographic research, user feedback analysis, and heuristic analysis.
Course journals will be provided for coursework activities.
6. Video Streaming Platforms for Research
Platforms like YouTube or TikTok will be needed for watching videos related to app usage, such as reviews, tutorials, and user feedback to inform your research in Lesson 1.
7. Recording/Observational Tools for User Testing
Any recording tool to capture observations, e.g., a smartphone or screen recording tool, for documenting user testing experiences and feedback.
8. Paper Prototyping Materials (Optional)
If you want to experiment with non-screen-based prototyping, you may use simple paper, pens, and markers to create physical wireframes before digitizing them.
9. Access to the UAL Short Courses VLE
Tools for sharing progress, such as discussion forums.
10. Reflection and Iteration Documentation
A place to write reflections on user testing, challenges faced, and iteration strategies. This can be done using your course journals or any preferred format for storing notes and feedback.
These materials will help you engage with the course, from research and prototyping to testing and iteration, and will support the development of a complete UX design project.
